SAY NO TO A FORCED MARRIAGE!
Nobody must be married against his or her will
- not in Albania
- not in Afghanistan
- not in Lebanon
- not in Iraq
- not in Turkey
- not in Asia
- not in Africa
- and also not in Germany!
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Act of 1948 states: “Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.” (Article 16)
Forced marriages are not only against human rights, but also against a number of laws, treaties and declarations in a lot of countries.
Forced marriages are a form of violence against girls and women. Love does not grow from force. Your wedding should be a beautiful day in your life. YOU will live with your husband and you should love him – not your parents and not your relations! Tell your relations as early as possible that you do not want to marry. Don’t wait until the wedding is planned and the invitations are sent out.
You can do something if you are forced to get married.
Maybe you think that your parents have the law on their side. Maybe you are afraid that nobody will believe you.
In Germany forced marriages are forbidden. On 1.7.2011 a special law was passed to fight forced marriages and to protect the victims of force weddings. This law punishes perpetrators with up to five years in prison.
You can resist when you are forced to get married.
Just speaking with someone can help you find out what you want to do. You can turn to someone in your family, a teacher or an advice centre.
In Germany there are advice centres that have experience with forced marriages. They can help – even if you are married already. If you have to hide, they can find accommodation in an emergency shelter.
If you want to, you can be counselled anonymously and you do not have to give your name.
IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE MARRIED AGAINST YOUR WILL AND YOU NEED SUPPORT, YOU CAN WRITE.
